Renewing Your Virginia Real Estate License

Virginia real estate licenses are issued on a 2-year cycle by the Virginia Real Estate Board (DPOR). Once your license expires, you may not practice real estate until it is renewed.

Board regulations provide a 30-day grace period after the expiration date to renew without penalty; after that, a reinstatement fee applies.

Renewal Checklist

  • Find your license expiration date on your DPOR record.
  • Complete 16 hours of Board-approved continuing education through an approved provider.
  • Submit your renewal application and fee to DPOR on or before your expiration date.
  • If you miss the deadline, renew within 30 days to avoid a reinstatement fee.

Who Generally Needs CE?

This continuing education requirement applies to brokers and salespersons renewing a license they’ve renewed at least once before. If this is your first renewal after initial licensure, a separate post-license education requirement may apply instead — verify with DPOR if unsure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many continuing education hours do Virginia real estate salespersons need?

If you’re an experienced salesperson, you need 16 hours of DPOR-approved continuing education each 2-year renewal cycle before you can renew your license.

What subjects are required?

Under HB 383 / SB 330, five subjects are required: 3 hours Ethics & Standards of Conduct, 2 hours Fair Housing, 2 hours Legal Updates and Emerging Trends, 2 hours Real Estate Agency, and 2 hours Real Estate Contracts — 11 hours total. Any remaining hours up to 16 can be Board-approved electives.

What happens if I don’t renew on time?

Virginia gives you a 30-day grace period past your license expiration date to renew penalty-free. After that, expect a reinstatement fee, and you’re not permitted to practice until the license is renewed.

How is continuing education reported to DPOR?

Education Pathways reports your completed CE hours directly to the Virginia Real Estate Board — usually within five business days of finishing your coursework.

Can I take Virginia real estate continuing education online?

Yes, all Virginia courses through Education Pathways are self-paced and delivered online, and you keep access for a full twelve months after purchase.

Does completing the bundle automatically renew my license?

No — completing your CE hours is only one step. You still need to submit your renewal application and fee to DPOR yourself before your license expiration date.
