The Standard 12-Credit Breakdown

Most renewing brokers, broker-salespersons and salespersons need at least 12 approved credits. At least six must be core credits, including the mandatory subjects below.

2Ethics
1Fair Housing & NJLAD
1Agency
2Additional Core
6Core or Elective

These categories total 12, not 18. Mandatory subjects count within the core minimum. Additional Ethics, Fair Housing or Agency credits may fill other core or elective space; elective credits cannot replace a required subject.

Exemptions and Different License Situations

  • New salespersons: those first licensed July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 are exempt from CE for the June 30, 2027 renewal. Those first licensed in the first year of the term generally must complete CE.
  • Referral status: no CE is required while renewing as a salesperson licensed with a real estate referral company. Changing license type has separate requirements; NJREC specifies core-only credits for that change. Do not assume a standard bundle with electives fits.
  • Long-serving brokers: brokers with 40 or more years in broker status may qualify for an approved exemption; it is not an automatic exemption for every longtime licensee.
  • Other routes: qualifying broker prelicensure education completed during the term can satisfy CE. NJREC also provides an application process for specified hardship waivers.

Check the current-term NJREC instructions before relying on an exemption or alternative.

Credit Rules That Affect Course Choice

  • Credits do not carry over to the next licensing term.
  • The same course cannot earn credit twice in one term.
  • Verify NJ approval and category; approval in another state does not automatically establish NJ credit.
  • Keep completion certificates and check the PSI record.

For dates, the late CE fee and questionnaire steps, use the 2027 renewal guide. To choose courses for missing categories, use the class selection guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need six elective credits?

No. The remaining six credits can be core, elective or a combination. You must still satisfy the mandatory subjects and overall core minimum.

Can extra Fair Housing or Agency credits fill additional core credits?

Yes. Credits beyond the subject minimum can count toward the additional core requirement or remaining credits. Count each earned credit once toward the 12-credit total.

Are second-year new salespersons exempt from renewal itself?

No. The exemption concerns CE for this term. The license renewal and individual questionnaire requirements are separate.

How can I verify my remaining categories?

Review the credits and course categories in your PSI transcript against the standard breakdown, then confirm any special license-status requirements with NJREC.
