Official Annual Breakdown

Every calendar year of your 3-year cycle needs at least 6 hours, split as shown below. Over the full 3-year cycle that totals 6 hours legal + 3 hours Fair Housing + 9 hours elective = 18 hours.

1Fair Housing (per year, since Feb 13, 2024)
3Elective (per year)

This summary reflects Michigan’s continuing education framework including the Fair Housing requirement effective February 13, 2024. Requirements can change — confirm current rules at michigan.gov/lara before relying on this page.

Deadline and Reporting

Michigan doesn’t publish one shared statewide CE or renewal deadline — your license cycle and renewal date run from your own license issuance date. Confirm your exact dates through your LARA licensing account.

Since November 1, 2018, LARA requires continuing education courses to be reviewed and certified by CE Marketplace (operated by Michigan Realtors®) for the credit to count toward renewal. Education Pathways’ Michigan courses are CE Marketplace certified, and completions are reported to your CE Marketplace profile — usually within 24 hours, though the governing agency can take a few days to post it.

Important State Rules

  • Complete at least 6 hours in every calendar year of your cycle.
  • Include at least 2 hours law/rules and 1 hour Fair Housing each year.
  • Use only CE Marketplace–certified courses — others don’t count toward renewal.
  • Don’t repeat the same course for credit within one 3-year cycle.
  • Don’t wait until your renewal deadline to finish CE.

Education Pathways Approval Information

CE Marketplace Certification

Michigan doesn’t use a single school-wide provider number the way some states do. Each Education Pathways Michigan course instead carries its own individual CE Marketplace certification number — see the CE Classes page for details on each class.

Course Access and Certificates

Courses are online and self-paced. Live product pages state that learners receive a certificate of completion and retain access for 12 months after purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many continuing education hours do Michigan real estate licensees need?

Michigan real estate salespersons and brokers complete at least 18 clock hours of continuing education every 3-year license cycle, with a minimum of 6 hours required in each calendar year of that cycle.

What mandatory subjects must be included every year?

Each calendar year must include at least 2 hours covering real estate law, rules, and court cases, and at least 1 hour of Fair Housing coursework, effective February 13, 2024. The remaining hours in that year may be general real estate education.

Does Michigan require CE courses to be pre-approved?

Yes. Since November 1, 2018, LARA has required continuing education courses to be reviewed and certified by CE Marketplace, operated by Michigan Realtors®, for the credit to count toward renewal. Education Pathways’ Michigan courses are CE Marketplace certified.

How is my Michigan CE completion reported?

Education Pathways reports course completions to your CE Marketplace profile, usually within 24 hours, though it can take the governing agency a few days to post the credit. You can register a free CE Marketplace profile at cemarketplace.net to track your own compliance history.

Can I take the same course twice for credit?

No. Courses cannot be repeated for credit within the same 3-year license cycle.

When is my Michigan real estate license renewal due?

Renewal and license cycle dates vary based on your original license issue date rather than one shared statewide deadline. Confirm your specific renewal date through your LARA licensing account.
